Kiva of the Shifting Sands

Project overview

Kiva of the Shifting Sands Community Center was inspired by the Pueblo people and their architecture. The Pueblo lived by the philosophy of “oneness with nature. ˮ The site was designed around a large amphitheater in the center representing a kiva: a sub-grade gathering space used for activities designed to honor native cultures. Radiating out from the central amphitheater are several garden beds, a contemplation space, two galleries, a classroom, a cafe, and a library.

The focus of the project was on utilizing masonry for its durability, insulating properties, and aesthetic appeal. Showcasing the legacy of Pueblo architecture, the building was designed to feel as though you are moving from the present to the past. The wings of the building represent the rocky environment, holding views of the sands of time. The center cylindrical tower portrays the greatness of the Pueblo culture rising out of the harsh New Mexican desert.
